Oswald’s Alyssa Jacunski Celebrates Successful LLS Man and Woman of the Year Campaign

Man and Woman of the year

We are about halfway through Oswald’s year of celebration, and there has been much to celebrate. For me, this includes a successful campaign as a candidate for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Man & Woman of the Year Campaign (MWOY).

Man & Woman of the Year is a ten week fundraising campaign where the man and woman that raise the most funds are awarded the title of “Man or Woman of the Year.” The ten weeks culminate with a Grand Finale Gala where all participants, their friends and family are able to celebrate all their hard work. The campaign and Grand Finale are extremely overwhelming. There were smiles and laughter, but there were also tears as we heard the stories of two incredible kids who are battling or have battled for their lives.

My family knows this battle all too well. My brother, Jay, was diagnosed eight years ago with a form of lymphoma. After eight months filled with chemotherapy, spinal taps, side effects and so much more, Jay passed away at the age of 16. He is the reason why I accepted my nomination to be a candidate for this year’s MWOY.

It was never about winning. It was and always has been about raising as much money as possible and making a difference. Everyone comes out better on the other side by participating in this campaign. As a candidate, you experience emotion from excited to anxious to stressed – but it is nothing in comparison to what thousands of people experience every year fighting cancer. If a three year old can battle cancer, I can make it through a ten week campaign.

Twelve candidates in Cleveland, Ohio were able to raise over $400,000 in ten weeks. We showed cancer how limited it really is. If that isn’t a success, then I don’t know what is.
