Precision Medicine is Personalizing Health Care

Approach Could Save Employers Money

Medical treatments are moving away from the one-size-fits-all approach to personalize illness prevention and treatment. Implementing this strategy improves the member experience and can help save employees and employers money on their health care spend.

Precision medicine considers the unique differences in a person’s genetic makeup, environment and lifestyle to provide a personalized and more effective way to handle their illness.

With this approach, clinicians may better predict the strategy necessary for someone’s disease. Further, it mitigates risk by weeding out unnecessary treatments and streamlining medical regimens, which also enhances the experience for the patient.

Precision medicine opportunities through strategic partnerships

One way of bringing precision medicine to employers is through a partnership with Private Health Management (PHM). This clinically sophisticated, complex care management organization assists members with serious medical conditions, closing the gaps many face in navigating a typical health care setting.

PHM provides more depth and skills in appropriate medical treatment in less time. The company enhances the member experience by supporting them along the complex journey when they receive a life-altering diagnosis. They avoid unnecessary, ineffective and costly tests and treatment paths, speeding up the time it takes to get on the road to the most impactful treatment.

Through predictive modeling within high-risk severity groups, Unison Risk Advisors’ (URA) annual report identified a population across the book of business who would be best served by complex case management intervention, with diagnoses ranging from cancer to neurodegenerative disease and beyond.

This pool accounts for 3% of the total membership, but their conditions contributed to 15% of the total claims. Intervention by care management companies such as PHM could optimize savings of 15-20% of these claims.

URA’s analytics team works with PHM to provide a direct assessment of a member’s diagnosis and determines the best clinical path forward. In addition to lowering the cost of claims, this strategy may also have a positive impact on their stop loss premiums at renewal.
