Special Message from Robert Klonk, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Oswald Companies
It is with profound sadness to share the news that Jim Pender, former Chairman & CEO of Oswald Companies, passed away Sept. 4, 2026.
For many of us, Jim was far more than a leader. As the grandson of our founder, James B. Oswald, and the last member of the Oswald family to lead our organization, Jim’s impact on this company is woven into the fabric of who we are today.
His vision, values, and unwavering belief in our people helped shape the culture that continues to guide us. He first joined the family business in June of 1953, prior to earning his B.A. from Yale, and returned to serve in the roles of President, CEO and Chairman prior to his retirement in 2009.
One of Jim’s most enduring legacies was his decision in 1985 to establish Oswald’s Employee Stock Ownership Plan. By transferring a portion of his ownership into a trust for the benefit of employees, Jim demonstrated his belief that success should be shared by those who help create it.
Jim’s influence extended far beyond the walls of our company. He was an industry leader, mentor, and advocate, blazing the trail as founding members of Assurex and CIAB. He was also a respected business leader, a trusted advisor, and a generous member of our community. Through his service on numerous boards, philanthropic efforts, and countless contributions to civic organizations, he strengthened the communities we serve and touched the lives of many throughout Northeast Ohio and beyond.
Most importantly, Jim was a genuinely good person. He cared deeply about people, whether they were colleagues, clients, friends, or members of the community. He led with humility, integrity, and a sense of humor, always taking a sincere interest in those around him. He served as a mentor and friend to many still with us today.
On behalf of the entire Oswald family of companies, we extend our deepest condolences to Jim’s family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him. We are grateful for his leadership and the lasting legacy he leaves behind.
Oswald was fortunate that Jim played a major role and contributor to Oswald’s history video anthology.
