In a move that helps Oswald Companies continue its trajectory of organic growth, the firm has promoted Christina Capadona-Schmitz to chief marketing officer and hired Shannon Mortland as director of communications.

The move supports a significant period of growth at Oswald, which joined forces with Baltimore-based insurance brokerage RCM&D in 2020, forming Unison Risk Advisors. Earlier this year, Unison Risk Advisors announced a strategic investment partnership with Peloton Capital Management, a private equity firm in Toronto.

“Oswald has already achieved monumental growth with the investment by Peloton Capital Management and our partnership with RCM&D, and we aren’t slowing down,” said Robert Klonk, chairman of Oswald Companies. “As Oswald and Unison Risk Advisors explore additional expansion opportunities, it is important to enhance our marketing strategy to increase visibility across all of our markets.”

As chief marketing officer and a member of Oswald’s senior leadership team, Capadona-Schmitz will continue to lead that charge. She directs the planning and execution of corporate-wide efforts, including brand, visibility and growth strategies for Oswald’s business units, specialty divisions and regional office markets. Prior to this role, Capadona-Schmitz served as vice president and director of marketing, communications and media. She joined Oswald in 2013.

Capadona-Schmitz served as a leader and executive sponsor of Oswald’s diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives; is a founder of OswaldCLIMBS, Oswald’s organization for young professionals; and an alumni member and advisor to the Oswald Women’s Leadership Council.

As part of the marketing team, Mortland will lead all internal and external communications, as well as sponsorships and community partnerships. Having launched her career in print journalism before focusing on public relations and communications, she brings more than 25 years of experience to Oswald. Mortland most recently served as vice president of regional media relations at PNC Bank. Prior to that role, she held leadership positions in the health care and gaming industries.

“Christina’s efforts, talents and leadership have made her a vital component of Oswald’s expansive growth over this past decade. She has built and scaled a professionally managed marketing practice, highlighted by the nurturing and advancement of our talented team of marketing, communications and design professionals,” said Jessica Jung, president of Oswald Companies. “The addition of Shannon marks an exciting new chapter for us. Her professional expertise, coupled with our expanded focus on strategically communicating with internal and external partners, will help position Oswald for even greater success. The sky is the limit with this well-rounded, talented team of marketing professionals.”

Capadona-Schmitz extends her commitment to community into personal volunteer and board service in Northeast Ohio, including serving on the Board of Directors of the West Side Catholic Center 2016 to present, and was appointed to the Board of Trustees for St. Edward High School in 2022. She was previously on the Board of Directors for the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation, Ohio Chapter. She is a member of the Assurex Global Brand Committee and The Council of Insurance Agents & Brokers (CIAB) Marketing Working Group. She graduated from Baldwin Wallace University in 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in communication and media studies. She is a 2018 recipient of the Distinguished Sales & Marketing Executives Award from SME Cleveland.

Mortland graduated from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism. She earned her Master of Arts degree in communication and leadership studies from Gonzaga University. Mortland is also an adjunct professor at Baldwin Wallace University and serves on the board of the Press Club of Cleveland.
